It was founded to build the knowledge and capacity of those seeking to strengthen their changemaking efforts by establishing best practice for impact communications and ensuring those best practices are adopted widely and effectively.
By undertaking new research, synthesizing and crystallizing existing practice, and providing critical communications support the Center is a resource for those wishing to communicate their issue to the right audience in a way that will achieve the desired outcomes.
The CFIC has US 501(c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization, and donations are tax deductible.
What are 'Impact Communications'? 'Impact Communications' are any form of information or message transmitted to an audience with the purpose of advancing a cause, soliciting support, provoking empathy or changing a behavior in the audience.
Typically, these messages are transmitted through written, visual and audio means from an advocacy organization, political candidate, charity, educational institution or government agency. Often these sorts of communications will be in the form of TV advertisements, social media content, website content, newspaper op eds, podcasts, and emails, but they may also be much broader than this: street art and graffiti, billboards, conversations, performance and much much more.
What does the CFIC do? The Center for Impact Communications empowers those creating communications and campaigns with a purpose to do so more effectively.
It predominantly does so through:
- research designed to measure the impact of various forms of communications approaches;
- education and training of those engaging communications techniques in their work;
- amplification of underrepresented voices in the media;
- and organization of efforts to distill best practice and form connections between those endeavoring to have an impact through their communications.
The CFIC also partners with a broad range of research institutions, NGOs, foundations and for-benefit social enterprises and B corporations to advance the mission of social change through more impactful communications, campaigns and partnerships.
